HealthEast Care System ~ St. Joseph's Hospital Expansion Renovation

St. Paul, Minnesota

Project Description

Slated to close over a decade ago, St. Joseph’s Hospital, part of the HealthEast Care System, made a commitment to the residents of St. Paul to revitalize the community by undertaking a complex re-development.

The significance and magnitude of this project prompted HealthEast to rely on their trusted healthcare advisor, Boldt, to lead the effort. HealthEast not only made a commitment to the community but also to themselves to re-develop their facilities and strategies for future long-term growth and stability. Boldt had recently prepared a master facility plan that outlined the way to lead the organization into the 21st Century.

St. Joseph’s commitment to the community led them to decide to stay on their current site despite significant site constraints. Boldt led the team to develop creative solutions for project logistics, backfilling and staging during the construction phases. St. Joseph’s Hospital and Boldt worked side by side to overcome obstacles during construction and developed a first class healthcare campus.

The complex project includes a new 300-space parking ramp, a new five story 185,000-sq.-ft. tower with 89 private rooms, the remodeling of 69,500 sq. ft. of space within the existing hospital and the demolition of a 80,000-sq.-ft. multi-story structure to allow for a new state-of-the-art emergency department. The new patient tower spans 86 feet across a city street, captures views of the northern edge of downtown. The tower allows for a continuum of inpatient care where patients from critical care to medical/surgical status remain on one floor and perhaps one room for their entire stay.

Under Boldt’s leadership, St. Joseph’s milestone project was completed on time, on budget and without interruption to the hospital’s day-to-day services.
