U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs ~ Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital

Hines, Illinois

Project Description

The Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital projects evolved through a partnership with AH West Group LLC, a disabled veteran owned small business. In 2006, AH West Group LLC, was formed and began working on VA and Corps of Engineers projects as the general contractor for small construction projects throughout the United States.

With a desire to grow and do larger projects, AH West Group approached Boldt and our mentoring partnership began. Since then, our partnership has bid a number of projects in the area and has recently completed work on several projects at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital as well as several at the Clement Zablocki VA Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Catheterization Laboratory
The cath lab remodel at the hospital posed a number of unique challenges for the construction team.

Shortly after being awarded the project, the hospital staff decided to keep the second lab open to perform non-invasive procedures during construction. After working through the logistics of the site, we developed a viable two-part phasing plan to enable the VA to continue performing non-invasive procedures. This decision by the hospital required the planning, implementation and continual checking of our infection control program which included daily inspections of our containment walls, negative air and air quality monitoring.

The utilization of Lean construction principles including pull scheduling practices throughout the construction duration was vital to the completion of this project.

The remodeled lab includes a new Siemens Medical Group Artis Zee multi-purpose ceiling mounted system, Artis Zee control room, equipment room, two recovery rooms, clean supply room and scrub area. A new AHU with VAV system was provided to service the entire cath lab department.

2nd Floor Acute Surgery Phase Project
This project consisted of the complete interior demolition and renovation of approximately 12,700 sq. ft. of space. This included the building of three acute surgery suites, including a bio med room, anesthesia storage, clean room, soiled equipment room, med gas storage, blood/gas lab, conference room and team room.

The project includes a completely redesigned HVAC system to meet the stringent codes set forth by the VA. AH West Group and Boldt have been deeply involved in this redesign with the VA, architect and engineer to insure that the system design meets the standards set forth by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

2nd Floor Staff Core Phase Project
This project consists of the interior renovation of approximately 9,800 sq. ft. of space for the VA hospital staff. This space includes meeting rooms, locker rooms and storage space and will be utilized by the acute surgery and ICU staff located on this floor.

Connecting Corridor Project
The connecting corridor project was a high profile project, connecting the spinal cord injury facility to the main hospital. The corridors offer patients being moved from building to building a smoother transition.
