The General Motors Body Shop in Wentzville, Missouri is a 186 bay facility that is used to assemble the new mid-size Chevrolet Colorado pick-up truck. Total area of the building is 380,000 square feet with a roof height of approximately 33 feet.
Boldt partnered with SSOE Group to provide design and engineering services for this design/build project. Design basis for the project was preliminary bridging documents provided by General Motors. A 3D model was developed to coordinate the complex mechanical and electrical systems required for the project.
Boldt provided leadership for a collaborative, integrated form of project delivery. Boldt partnered with key subcontractors during the pre-construction and 3D model development phase to assist in the design effort with constructability and construction means and methods reviews and input.
In July 2012 Boldt broke ground to deliver on a 14 month completion schedule. The project was divided into 3 phases to ensure that specific turnover dates were met in May 2013, June 2013 and September 2013. Boldt overcame unseasonable weather conditions to build the project and connect the building into an existing, operating facility.
Key elements of the new facility include:
- A 15 roof mounted air supply
- Houses for weld water, chilled water and domestic water
- 3 cooling towers
- Natural gas and siphon roof drains
- A 2 bay penthouse for electrical substation equipment
- Electrical bus systems for welding and tooling equipment
