Over the past 10 years, U.S. wind power capacity has grown 15% per year, and wind is now the largest source of renewable power in the United States.

Most construction crews build on urban or suburban sites and transport equipment on existing roads, but in the world of wind farms, extreme conditions are the norm. For the Boldt Company, neither wind nor weather, nor dark of night got in the way of completing a challenging wind farm in rural Illinois.

Construction companies like Boldt have turned to programs like Minnesota’s AGC CHASE Partnership to help them achieve their safety goals. The CHASE program is designed to recognize AGC member contractors for their safety programs and performance, while providing incentives for the partnership. Recently, Boldt applied for a CHASE LEVEL 3 Partnership on its St. Olaf College project in Northfield, Minnesota.

1726-Boldt_9_23_2020_sm.jpgThe hallmark of construction at The Boldt Company is collaboration. But when physical distancing puts a wrench in the personalized give-and-take of building complicated structures, adaptation is critical. Reopening plans for Boldt’s 14 national offices and dozens of job sites depended on rapid innovation and the creative use of technology.

The Boldt Company had a narrow window of time to rebuild a paper machine for their client. Just 45 days to convert a bleached, lightweight, coated paper asset into one that would produce an unbleached linerboard and corrugated medium. The tight schedule meant shutting down production for over a month. To complicate matters, the nation was on the front end of global pandemic. Boldt used corporate guidelines and ND Paper requirements to augment safety protocols on the jobsite.

Hybrid social media strategies emerge as an option for virtual topping out celebrations. Virtual topping out ceremonies may never replace the impact of the “real thing,” but for now, they can make us feel one step closer to staying safe during COVID-19.
