King Plant Steam Turbine Replacement

The Allen S. King Plant rehabilitation project serves as a shining example of how BoldThinking® leads to innovation. When a steam turbine generator drive system needed a complete rebuild, Boldt demonstrated its expertise in efficiency to reduce downtime at this 550-megawatt facility.
As contractor, Boldt worked with Black & Veatch engineers and Alstom Power Group equipment suppliers on this project. We were challenged to remove an existing 350,000-lb. high-pressure turbine and replace it with a new 400,000-lb. turbine within 45 days, as well as completely rebuild two low-pressure turbines. Using BoldThinking, the construction team found a solution: remove the existing turbine piece and install the new one as one completely assembled unit.
This approach not only resulted in a project completed on time, but Xcel Energy also realized significant cost savings. Meeting the owners' needs with flexibility and imagination is at the core of our BoldThinking.
