Boldt Role:

Design/Build Civil and Erection Contractor

Key Points:

This fast-track project delivery required up to two foundations and one wind turbine installation per day, and was completed on schedule and within the budget parameters. Winter conditions of ice, above average snowfalls and below average temperatures made this a very challenging project. Warming trailers were brought in for the crews at the remote sites.

Blue Sky/Green Field Wind Farm

Fond du Lac County, WI

One of the Midwest's largest sustainable energy ventures, Blue Sky/Green Field is owned by Wisconsin-based utility We Energies. Their plan called for the construction of a 7,000 sq. ft. operations and maintenance building and erection of 88 Vestas 1.65 MW wind turbines, enough to generate 145 MW of electricity and power more than 36,000 homes.

At Boldt, we looked forward to bringing our wind-power expertise to the project. Working as civil and erection contractor, we were responsible for the construction of all foundations, erection of associated towers, and wind turbine installations. Boldt provided design/build services for the 7,000 sq. ft. building, essential preconstruction civil engineering and the 440-ton Manitowoc 16000 crane used to set the towers in place.

Essential planning included the creation of an on-site "lay-down" yard for delivery of the towers, contingencies for removal of bedrock encountered during excavation and scheduling of critical work during early morning and late evening hours due to their lower wind speeds and safer working conditions.
