Humboldt Mine Processing Facility

Champion, MI

Located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Humboldt Mine is a retired iron and gold processing facility, purchased by Rio Tinto in 2008. The company will begin mining operations in 2013, after renovations and updates to the facility are completed in order to meet current industry standards.

Currently, Boldt serves as general contractor on the site and its scope of work includes demolition of the Humboldt mill and subsequent site cleanup. The site must be cleaned of hazardous materials that were once used in gold processing such as asbestos, lead and sodium cyanide. Once completed, equipment will be installed to process approximately 17,000 tons of nickel and 13,000 tons of copper annually.

Rio Tinto and Boldt both have one thing in mind when it comes to safety: everyone goes home safe. Through collaboration, an attention to detail and continuous improvement, Boldt and its subcontractors logged over 4,800 work hours in May, 2011, without a single lost time accident or safety incident.
