Renovating and constructing a school of architecture presents the unique challenge of combining leading-edge design with high-efficiency systems and environmentally friendly materials - creating a space that inspires while students learn the art and science of architecture.
In our construction management role, we added 30,000 sq. ft. of new space and renovated a 47,000 sq. ft. existing building.
This project applied LEED® principles such as environmentally friendly materials, daylight harvesting and natural shade. The open HVAC system incorporates special design features to minimize noise, and the building's high-efficiency systems include fritted glass, passive shade and diffused lighting.
The interior is exposed, including the superstructure, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems. The renovated facility, built in the early 20th century, includes minimal floors and ceilings to give it an exposed feel.
The school also offers gallery and studio design spaces, an architectural library, a visualization/computer lab, a model shop and expanded space for faculty.
