Columbus Street Power Plant Addition
Manitowoc, WI
The first new circulating fluid bed unit built in Wisconsin in two decades, Manitowoc Public Utilities' plant addition uses clean coal technology, burning 100 percent low-cost coal and petroleum coke. It can burn other fuel sources as well, enabling the owner to control emission levels while enhancing power reliability to the community.
As installation contractor, we worked with Kvaerner Power, using multiphase construction techniques, value engineering, and Building Information Modeling to save time and money. Work included installation of a water line and foundation caissons; erection of steel supports, a steam turbine, boiler assembly and ductwork; and the balance of plant construction, including equipment and controls.
Communication, teamwork and aggressive scheduling were critical to the success of this project. After one year of performance testing and operations, the new boiler was found to operate better than guaranteed, particularly in emissions, limestone consumption and efficiencies.
