Key Points:

In an effort to ensure that the students and university staff knew exactly what type of accommodations they would have, mockups of the various room structures, complete with furniture, were erected at the Boldt Appleton office. The mockups also gave the subcontractors a more precise idea of what they were bidding on and provided an opportunity to suggest alternate methods and materials earlier in the construction process. Additionally, it helped decide the sequence of construction work and made the installations as economic as possible.

Wisconsin Builder magazine recognized Hiett Hall as one of their Top Projects for 2003.

Hiett Hall was acknowledged with a 2003 Build Wisconsin Award from the AGC of Wisconsin.

Hiett Residence Hall

Appleton, WI

Fortunate indeed are the Lawrence University students who live in Hiett Hall. Situated on a hillside, between a bluff and a riverbed, this 79,500 sq. ft. dorm facility is home to almost 200 students, who can choose from several types of suites and rooms to enjoy homelike amenities.

In the dual roles of construction manager and general contractor, Boldt and VOA architects made the planning and bidding processes as economical and efficient as possible by first mocking up all the room structures for team review.

We used Lean principles throughout construction and incorporated sustainable features, such as in-floor radiant heat, heat recovery systems, tinted glass, and native plant and grass seeding, and recycled more than 40 tons of scrap drywall.

Hiett Residence Hall, constructed using the PERI forming system, not only offers safety via tunneled access to parking, but students enjoy the conveniences of computer stations, a laundry room, air conditioning, a kitchen facility and an outdoor patio.
