The Building for Kids Expansion

Appleton, WI

Already a fun-filled, educational magnet for the young minds of Northeast Wisconsin, the Fox Cities Children's Museum chose to add another 30,000 sq. ft. of creative space to their existing downtown Appleton facility.

Our specific challenge was to design the expansion and then build it, without shutting down the Museum during renovations. Collaborating with the project owners and exhibitors, our design/build teams were able to create a versatile, exciting place, with minimal interruptions to their business operations.

Our renovations included relocating the building's main entrance to ground level, a new elevator and open-access stairway, classrooms, a children's theater, art and science studio, and an updated HVAC system. We also had to cut 10 floor openings in the concrete floors for the new 35' high x 45' wide tree to "grow" through.

Perhaps most rewarding of all - besides a Build Wisconsin Award from the Associated General Contractors of Wisconsin - we were able to give the Museum everything they asked for and more, while still saving them money through cost-saving changes made in the course of the project.
