Cliffs Natural Resources

United Taconite

Forbes, MN

This taconite processing plant sat idle in 2003, but then Cliffs Natural Resources and Laiwu Steel Group  took ownership. They started working to reopen shut down lines and make capital improvements to increase production. Currently the plant produces over 5 million tons of taconite pellets annually and central to meeting that rate has been routine maintenance and intensive maintenance during shutdowns.

Boldt’s history working with Cliffs Natural Resources and work around the country during shutdowns made it an easy choice for the owners when looking for a company to perform major repairs during a six-week shutdown.

During the shutdown, Boldt logged over 22,000 work hours while still ensuring safety  in all areas of the job site. Boldt provided millwright, ironworker and labor support to increase production during a major line repair. Other work during the shutdown included: major repairs to the traveling grate, scrubber systems, rotary kiln, feeders, fans, conveyors, and cooler.
