Northshore Mining

Silver Bay, MN

There’s a lot of maintenance work that needs to be completed on a mining site on a day-to-day basis and during shutdowns. This mine, producing 5 million tons of taconite pellets annually, is no exception. Boldt has been an on-site presence at the mine since 1989, building a strong relationship with owner and operator Cliffs Natural Resources.

In supporting the mine’s production goals, Boldt maintains a small staff for more frequent maintenance work and staffs up to 60-80 during monthly shutdowns that last one to four days.

Boldt makes safety a top priority when completing work on capital projects and shutdowns. Over a five year period, as one of their Alliance Contractors, Boldt employees logged about 165,000 work hours. The scope of work at Northshore Mining has been diverse, including: aligning motors, drives and conveyors, installing and repairing conveyors, ductwork, equipment lifeline analysis, loading dock construction, work on major stacks and repairs to mixers, overhead cranes, loading hoppers and booster pumps.
