Severance Residence Hall and Great Hall Renovations

Northfield, MN

Founded in 1866, Carleton College is a small, close-knit campus that prides itself on being a good citizen of a more sustainable world. So when one of its oldest dormitory buildings, a 1920s example of Collegiate Gothic architecture, needed improvements, historic authenticity and environmental responsibility were important considerations.

As construction manager and general contractor, Boldt worked with HGA architects to renovate the 66-bed dormitory and its Great Hall gathering area, dining area and bakery, and entryway, while the facility continued to serve students.

The two phases of renovations included dorm-room remodeling, sprinkler and fire protection, and new energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems throughout the 43,000 sq. ft. building.

Not only do the renovations meet Carleton College's high standards of sustainability and environmental responsibility, but the improvements are also virtually invisible behind Severance Hall's historic authenticity.
