XCEL Energy “I-Deliver” Award for Sherco Unit 3 Boiler Outage

BECKER, MN, November 29, 2017 – Recently, Boldt completed a large maintenance outage on the Unit 3 boiler at the Xcel Energy Sherburne County Generating Plant (Sherco) in Becker, Minnesota.

For the extraordinary effort on this project, the Xcel Energy team, led by Boldt’s construction efforts, received an internal “I-Deliver” Award from Xcel Energy management. This I-Deliver Award recognized the team’s delivery of such a large and complicated project with excellent safety and quality, while meeting schedule and budget targets.

Michael Aasen, Senior Engineer in Xcel Energy’s Engineering and Construction Group informed Boldt of this very special recognition and wanted Boldt to know that “its efforts were noticed all the way up the Xcel Energy chain of command.”

I-Deliver awards are very special recognition within the Xcel Energy organization. They are provided only to those who demonstrate extraordinary delivery of work product under difficult conditions or circumstances, while meeting budget and schedule expectations, without any safety or quality concerns along the way. Specific categories of excellence are recognized for each award. For this Sherco Unit 3 effort, the specific areas of recognition were, “outstanding contribution and dedication to safety, process and productivity improvement, and cost savings”.

Special recognition goes to Ben Row, Jesse Wark, and Mitch Cole for their planning, attention to detail, quality control, and outstanding safety record for the work. One key element this team brought to the project was a unique approach, which allowed access to the boiler through its roof. After consideration of several traditional side boiler entry options, a unique roof slide panel system was designed, which allowed the team to safely accelerate the project to meet a very tight schedule, and return the boiler to full operation without incident.
