Sutter Health’s Mission Bernal Project Wins 2018 Construction Industry Project Excellence Award Honorable mention

APPLETON, WI, November 15, 2018–Sutter Health California Pacific Medical Center’s (CPMC) Mission Bernal Campus (MBC) project, a 215,000-sq.-ft., 120-bed, 7-story replacement hospital located in San Francisco, has won honorable mention for the 2018 Construction Industry Project Excellence (CIPE) Awards from the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT). CURT is a national group of construction and engineering executives representing major corporations across the United States and the world

The award, which recognizes project teams for excellence in efficiency and outstanding delivery of capital projects, was presented at CURT’s Awards of Excellence Dinner on Nov. 13.

The MBC replacement hospital maintains vital services to its local community as a key component of Sutter Health CPMC’s multi-campus strategy. It will provide urgent care and emergency services, acute and critical care inpatient services, and special centers for birthing and senior health to the Mission District of San Francisco. The campus is also a robust ambulatory center and a portal for residents to the wealth of CPMC’s more intensive city-based tertiary and quaternary specialties. The facility complies with the most stringent building requirements of California law and remains operational after a strong earthquake. Designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, the design also reduces greenhouse gas emissions by lowering the use of energy and water as well as using 100 percent fresh air.

Financial, logistical and construction challenges were met on this $319 million facility using an integrated project delivery team (IPDT). The IPDT partnership built the hospital through SmithGroupJJR and Boulder Associate Architects’ programming and strategic planning knowledge, HerreroBoldt’s constructibility and estimating expertise and Sutter Health CPMC’s business development leadership. Other key contributors to the project include Degenkolb Engineers, BKF, Southland Industries, Rosendin Electric, Pankow and Harrison Drywall.

The key to the successful IPDT was the co-location of 60 designers, contractors and the owner together at one site. By leveraging the knowledge and expertise from designers and builders at one time, maximum value and cost savings were delivered throughout the project’s entire lifecycle.

Innovative project highlights include:

• Becoming one of the first-ever California hospitals to engage OSHPD in an electronic review for permitting and construction changes. This approach allowed the team to save millions of dollars and shaved a month off the project’s already-compressed 10-month target schedule.
• Successfully handling schedule challenges by using trade partner hand-off worksheets to promote accountability and catch any potential problems early.
• Using prefabricated modular building components to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
• Using an integrated project delivery-structured contract that included 12 risk and reward partners who were all financially incentivized to deliver the highest quality project possible without increasing costs.
• An analysis by the structure innovation team that resulted in a structural system that reduced the schedule and cost of the project.
• Developing an efficient plan for the project’s extremely complex utilities work within a highly-coordinated building information modeling.
• Involving the entire IPDT to coordinate project lay-down and deliveries on the urban, congested project site while still allowing neighboring hospital operations to continue undisrupted.
