Strategic Facility Planning
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

St. Luke’s Medical Center,
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

A high census and limited bed capacity created the need for a comprehensive plan to accommodate St. Luke’s growth and the replacement of older facilities. The goal of the Master Plan was to develop a strategy to replace beds and increase capacity prior to replacing infrastructure such as parking. The Master Plan called for a new building addition and bed tower to be constructed above a 7-story parking structure. The program included a consolidation of cardiac services including CV Surgery, CVICU, CICU, cardiac patient beds, and outpatient services. The new program released space in existing buildings for other program growth. The new twelve-story cardiac center and inpatient tower is now completed and is situated around and above the existing multi-level parking ramp, providing the hospital with the long-term ability to infill the existing parking ramp with additional clinical space.

West Allis Memorial Hospital,
West Allis, Wisconsin

BCS was engaged by West Allis Memorial Hospital to prepare a Master Plan and capacity study for a suburban Milwaukee hospital. The plan focused on growth strategies and opportunities to reposition critical departments such as surgery and diagnostics to improve flow and capacity. BCS prepared demand projections for bed capacity and ancillary services and completed a trend analysis that benchmarked the hospital against national and local trends. The master plan recommended creating a main entrance that ties into the Women’s Pavilion and the existing hospital, with direct connections to the medical office buildings and the proposed new hospital addition. BCS also recommended creating a new physician office and outpatient building that connects to the existing physician office tower and Women’s Pavilion. A defined capital plan was also created and based on priorities of the executive team.

Aurora Sinai Medical Center,
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Aurora Sinai Medical Center, formerly Sinai Samaritan Medical Center, engaged BCS to prepare an update of its Master Plan. The subjects of the Master Plan included: clarifying the current use of space, developing a best use strategy and conceptual plans for the campus buildings, and identifying opportunities to reduce the hospital square footage per adjusted occupied bed. The plan assessed the impact of removing one of the buildings, developed consensus on short and long-term strategies for site and facility development, and provide the hospital with phasing plans and capital budgets for the recommended renovations. Key components of the plan included: upgrading the hospital’s appearance with a new entrance, lobby, and exterior improvements; alignment and consolidation of key service lines; best-use strategies for ancillary buildings; and analysis of academic functions of the hospital.
