St. Joseph’s current ED is approximately 9,180 square feet and is handling 23,000 visits per year. Future projections suggest volume increasing to 35,000 site visits per year. Currently, the ED is landlocked and operating in undersized space consisting of 14 rooms including 1 resuscitation room, 3 exam rooms, 8 monitored bays, and 2 OB/GYN rooms. Ambulances are required to circle around a drive then back into an enclosed space which can accommodate only 2 vehicles at a time. In addition, the department currently has no imaging modalities.

The adjacent building will be demolished to allow space for the ED expansion. The plan calls for 11,096 square feet of new ED space which will include 13 treatment rooms, along with a 3 bay drive thru ambulance garage. This space will be built while the existing ED remains operational without disruption. |

Once the new space is completed, the ED will function out of the new space while the existing department is remodeled. Upon final completion, the new remodeled ED will contain 20 rooms, approximately 20,946 square feet, and include 6 resuscitation and 14 treatment rooms. |

As part of the remodeling phase, 1 CT Scan and 1 X-ray room will be built adjacent to the department. In addition, a new Behavioral Care Unit will be built adjacent to the department. |

A design by Jim Lennon will be implemented using a center support core, with exam and treatment rooms surrounding the core, and public circulation areas wrapping the exam and treatment rooms. The design is similar to that of a thermometer, with the temperature sensor going up and down, just as staffing needs to flex up and down based on need. The design will accommodate up to 35,000 future visits and will also respond accordingly to staffing volumes. |
